The config HW_CONSOLE is always identical to the config VT and is not
visible in the kernel's build menuconfig. So, CONFIG_HW_CONSOLE is
redundant.
Replace all references to CONFIG_HW_CONSOLE with CONFIG_VT and remove
CONFIG_HW_CONSOLE.

After walking and trying to clean up the worst in the driver, I came
across the pci_driver::remove() _empty_ implementation. That would crash
the system at least during hot-unplug (or write to remove in sysfs).
There are many other problems:
* Initialization + deinitialization apparently comes from no-hotplug
support age. It needs a rewrite.
* Hairy debug macros. Drop them.
* Use of self-baked lists. Replace by list.
* The order of the functions should be inverted and fwd decls dropped.
* Coding style from the stone age. Fix.
* I assume there are many bugs, but the code is unreadable at times, so
hard to judge. There is one example posted [1].
I was able to find only one user back in 2016. So mark the driver as
BROKEN for some time. Either someone will notice and we can bring the
driver to this century. Or we will drop it completely if noone cares.

The ipwireless' Kconfig entry is currently sitting in char/pcmcia. But
the driver is in tty/. So move the entry to tty/ too.
First, it makes sense to have the entry along the driver. Second, whole
char/pcmcia is about to pass away.

TIOCSTI continues its long history of being used in privilege escalation
attacks[1]. Prior attempts to provide a mechanism to disable this have
devolved into discussions around creating full-blown LSMs to provide
arbitrary ioctl filtering, which is hugely over-engineered -- only
TIOCSTI is being used this way. 3 years ago OpenBSD entirely removed
TIOCSTI[2], Android has had it filtered for longer[3], and the tools that
had historically used TIOCSTI either do not need it, are not commonly
built with it, or have had its use removed.
Provide a simple CONFIG and global sysctl to disable this for the system
builders who have wanted this functionality for literally decades now,
much like the ldisc_autoload CONFIG and sysctl.

This driver exposes a standard TTY interface on top of the rpmsg
framework through a rpmsg service.
This driver supports multi-instances, offering a /dev/ttyRPMSGx entry
per rpmsg endpoint.

While mxser PCI cards are still around and produced (Moxa provided me
with two recently), ISA cards are obsolete for a long time. I haven't
seen anyone using the cards and the ISA code paths are barely tested.
Hence, remove ISA support from mxser driver so that we can clean the
driver up.

Adjust the kconfig a little to allow disabling NO_IOMEM in UML. To
make an "allyesconfig" with CONFIG_NO_IOMEM=n build, adjust a few
Kconfig things elsewhere and add dummy asm/fb.h and asm/vga.h files.

While the driver is still marked as maintained in MAINTAINERS, Comtrol
does not really care about this ancient driver. They are still
manufacturing serial devices, but those are controlled only by
out-of-tree drivers.
Comtrol didn't answer my pings, so this driver is apparently
unmaintained. Aside from that, the driver was untouched for years, only
whole-tree changes happened during the past years. The driver needs much
more care, so drop it for now. If someone steps up to reintroduce it,
they need to clean it up first.

orphan isicom) 10 years ago. Noone stepped up to take care of them and
to fix all the issues the driver has.

The Cyclades driver was orphaned by commit d459883e6c54 (MAINTAINERS:
remove two dead e-mail) 13 years ago. Noone stepped up to take care of
them and to fix all the issues the driver has.
On the top of that, there is no way to obtain the firmware for Z cards
from the vendor as cyclades.com ceased to exist.
So it's time to drop the driver with all its traces.

This reverts commit 757055ae8dedf5333af17b3b5b4b70ba9bc9da4e.
The commit caused that ttynull was used as the default console
on several systems[1][2][3]. As a result, the console was
blank even when a better alternative existed.
It happened when there was no console configured
on the command line and ttynull_init() was the first initcall
calling register_console().
Or it happened when /dev/ did not exist when console_on_rootfs()
was called. It was not able to open /dev/console even though
a console driver was registered. It tried to add ttynull console
but it obviously did not help. But ttynull became the preferred
console and was used by /dev/console when it was available later.
The commit tried to fix a historical problem that have been there
for ages. The primary motivation was the commit 3cffa06aeef7ece30f6
("printk/console: Allow to disable console output by using console=""
or console=null"). It provided a clean solution for a workaround
that was widely used and worked only by chance.
This revert causes that the console="" or console=null command line
options will again work only by chance. These options will cause that
a particular console will be preferred and the default (tty) ones
will not get enabled. There will be no console registered at
all. As a result there won't be stdin, stdout, and stderr for
the init process. But it worked exactly this way even before.
The proper solution has to fulfill many conditions:
+ Register ttynull only when explicitly required or as
the ultimate fallback.
+ ttynull should get associated with /dev/console but it must
not become preferred console when used as a fallback.
Especially, it must still be possible to replace it
by a better console later.
Such a change requires clean up of the register_console() code.
Otherwise, it would be even harder to follow. Especially, the use
of has_preferred_console and CON_CONSDEV flag is tricky. The clean
up is risky. The ordering of consoles is not well defined. And
any changes tend to break existing user settings.
Do the revert at the least risky solution for now.

stdin, stdout, and stderr standard I/O stream are created for the init
process. They are not available when there is no console registered
for /dev/console. It might lead to a crash when the init process
tries to use them, see the commit 48021f98130880dd742 ("printk: handle
blank console arguments passed in.").
Normally, ttySX and ttyX consoles are used as a fallback when no consoles
are defined via the command line, device tree, or SPCR. But there
will be no console registered when an invalid console name is configured
or when the configured consoles do not exist on the system.
Users even try to avoid the console intentionally, for example,
by using console="" or console=null. It is used on production
systems where the serial port or terminal are not visible to
users. Pushing messages to these consoles would just unnecessary
slowdown the system.
Make sure that stdin, stdout, stderr, and /dev/console are always
available by a fallback to the existing ttynull driver. It has
been implemented for exactly this purpose but it was used only
when explicitly configured.

Since commit 84af7a6194e4 ("checkpatch: kconfig: prefer 'help' over
'---help---'"), the number of '---help---' has been gradually
decreasing, but there are still more than 2400 instances.
This commit finishes the conversion. While I touched the lines,
I also fixed the indentation.
There are a variety of indentation styles found.
a) 4 spaces + '---help---'
b) 7 spaces + '---help---'
c) 8 spaces + '---help---'
d) 1 space + 1 tab + '---help---'
e) 1 tab + '---help---' (correct indentation)
f) 1 tab + 1 space + '---help---'
g) 1 tab + 2 spaces + '---help---'
In order to convert all of them to 1 tab + 'help', I ran the
following commend:

Move LDISC_AUTOLOAD ahead of the Serial drivers menu.
Move the Serial drivers menu ahead of the Non-standard serial port
support menu.
Move NOZOMI out of the SERIAL_NONSTANDARD area since it does not
depend on SERIAL_NONSTANDARD and it breaks the SERIAL_NONSTANDARD
menu list.
Alphabetize the remaining drivers (in tty/Kconfig) by their prompt strings.

'source' (include) all of the tty/*/Kconfig files from
drivers/tty/Kconfig instead of from drivers/char/Kconfig.
This consolidates them both in source code and in menu
presentation to the user.
Move hvc/Kconfig and serial/Kconfig 'source' lines into the
if TTY/endif block and remove the if TTY/endif blocks from
those 2 files.

If no console driver is enabled (or if a non-present driver is selected
with something like console=null in an attempt to disable the console),
opening /dev/console errors out, and init scripts and other userspace
code that relies on the existence of a console will fail. Symlinking
/dev/null to /dev/console does not solve the problem since /dev/null
does not behave like a real TTY.
To just provide a dummy console to userspace when no console driver is
available or desired, add a ttynull driver which simply discards all
writes. It can be chosen on the command line in the standard way, i.e.
with console=ttynull.

'default n' is the default value for any bool or tristate Kconfig
setting so there is no need to write it explicitly.
Also since commit f467c5640c29 ("kconfig: only write '# CONFIG_FOO
is not set' for visible symbols") the Kconfig behavior is the same
regardless of 'default n' being present or not:
...
One side effect of (and the main motivation for) this change is making
the following two definitions behave exactly the same:
config FOO
bool
config FOO
bool
default n
With this change, neither of these will generate a
'# CONFIG_FOO is not set' line (assuming FOO isn't selected/implied).
That might make it clearer to people that a bare 'default n' is
redundant.

By default, the kernel will automatically load the module of any line
dicipline that is asked for. As this sometimes isn't the safest thing
to do, provide a sysctl to disable this feature.
By default, we set this to 'y' as that is the historical way that Linux
has worked, and we do not want to break working systems. But in the
future, perhaps this can default to 'n' to prevent this functionality.

- Improvements for the spectre defense:
* The spectre related code is consolidated to a single file
nospec-branch.c
* Automatic enable/disable for the spectre v2 defenses (expoline vs.
nobp)
* Syslog messages for specve v2 are added
* Enable CONFIG_GENERIC_CPU_VULNERABILITIES and define the attribute
functions for spectre v1 and v2
- Add helper macros for assembler alternatives and use them to shorten
the code in entry.S.
- Add support for persistent configuration data via the SCLP Store Data
interface. The H/W interface requires a page table that uses 4K pages
only, the code to setup such an address space is added as well.
- Enable virtio GPU emulation in QEMU. To do this the depends
statements for a few common Kconfig options are modified.
- Add support for format-3 channel path descriptors and add a binary
sysfs interface to export the associated utility strings.
- Add a sysfs attribute to control the IFCC handling in case of
constant channel errors.
- The vfio-ccw changes from Cornelia.
- Bug fixes and cleanups.

The S390 architecture does not support any graphics hardware,
but with the latest support for Virtio GPU in Linux and Virtio
GPU emulation in QEMU, it's possible to enable graphics for
S390 using the Virtio GPU device.
To enable display we need to enable the Linux Virtual Terminal (VT)
layer for S390. But the VT subsystem initializes quite early
at boot so we need a dummy console driver till the Virtio GPU
driver is initialized and we can run the framebuffer console.
The framebuffer console over a Virtio GPU device can be run
in combination with the serial SCLP console (default on S390).
The SCLP console can still be accessed by management applications
(eg: via Libvirt's virsh console).

Commit 3840ed9548f7 ("tty: goldfish: Implement support for kernel
'earlycon' parameter") breaks an allmodconfig config on x86:

earlycon.c::parse_options() invokes uart_parse_earlycon() from serial_core.c
which is compiled=m because GOLDFISH_TTY itself (and most others) are =m.
To avoid that, I'm adding the _CONSOLE config option which is selected if the
GOLDFISH module itself is =y since it doesn't need the early bits for the =m
case (other drivers do the same dance).
The alternative would be to move uart_parse_earlycon() from
serial_core.c to earlycon.c (we don't have that many users of that
function).

Add early console functionality to the Goldfish tty driver.
When 'earlycon' kernel command line parameter is used with no options,
the early console is determined by the 'stdout-path' property in device
tree's 'chosen' node. This is illustrated in the following device tree
source example:

The /dev/ptmx device node is changed to lookup the directory entry "pts"
in the same directory as the /dev/ptmx device node was opened in. If
there is a "pts" entry and that entry is a devpts filesystem /dev/ptmx
uses that filesystem. Otherwise the open of /dev/ptmx fails.
The DEVPTS_MULTIPLE_INSTANCES configuration option is removed, so that
userspace can now safely depend on each mount of devpts creating a new
instance of the filesystem.
Each mount of devpts is now a separate and equal filesystem.
Reserved ttys are now available to all instances of devpts where the
mounter is in the initial mount namespace.
A new vfs helper path_pts is introduced that finds a directory entry
named "pts" in the directory of the passed in path, and changes the
passed in path to point to it. The helper path_pts uses a function
path_parent_directory that was factored out of follow_dotdot.
In the implementation of devpts:
- devpts_mnt is killed as it is no longer meaningful if all mounts of
devpts are equal.
- pts_sb_from_inode is replaced by just inode->i_sb as all cached
inodes in the tty layer are now from the devpts filesystem.
- devpts_add_ref is rolled into the new function devpts_ptmx. And the
unnecessary inode hold is removed.
- devpts_del_ref is renamed devpts_release and reduced to just a
deacrivate_super.
- The newinstance mount option continues to be accepted but is now
ignored.
In devpts_fs.h definitions for when !CONFIG_UNIX98_PTYS are removed as
they are never used.
Documentation/filesystems/devices.txt is updated to describe the current
situation.
This has been verified to work properly on openwrt-15.05, centos5,
centos6, centos7, debian-6.0.2, debian-7.9, debian-8.2, ubuntu-14.04.3,
ubuntu-15.10, fedora23, magia-5, mint-17.3, opensuse-42.1,
slackware-14.1, gentoo-20151225 (13.0?), archlinux-2015-12-01. With the
caveat that on centos6 and on slackware-14.1 that there wind up being
two instances of the devpts filesystem mounted on /dev/pts, the lower
copy does not end up getting used.

When CONFIG_PCI is not set, enabling CONFIG_CYZ_INTR has no
practical effect other than generating a warning about an
unused function:

Implement KGDB IO operations for MIPS Fast Debug Channel (FDC). This can
be enabled via Kconfig, which also allows the channel number to be
chosen.
The magic sysrq hack is implemented in the TTY driver, detecting just ^C
for the KGDB channel, and ^O followed by a letter for the FDC console
channel.
The KGDB operations are reasonably efficient thanks to the flush
callback, with a 4 byte buffer being used in both directions to allow up
to 4 bytes to be encoded per FDC word. Reading of data for KGDB will
discard any data received on other channels, which clearly isn't ideal,
but given that there is a single FIFO shared between channels we can't
do much better.

Add TTY driver and consoles for the MIPS EJTAG Fast Debug Channel (FDC),
which is found on the per-CPU MIPS Common Device Mapped Memory (CDMM)
bus.
The FDC is a per-CPU device which is used to communicate with an EJTAG
probe. RX and TX FIFOs exist, containing 32-bits of data and 4-bit
channel numbers. 16 general data streams are implemented on this for TTY
and console use by encoding up to 4 bytes on each 32-bit FDC word.
The TTY devices are named e.g. /dev/ttyFDC3c2 for channel 2 of the FDC
attached to logical CPU 3.
These can be used for getting the kernel log, a login prompt, or as a
GDB remote transport, all over EJTAG and without needing a serial port.
It can have an interrupt to notify of when incoming data is available in
the RX FIFO or when the TX FIFO is no longer full. The detection of this
interrupt occurs in architecture / platform code, but it may be shared
with the timer and/or performance counter interrupt.
Due to the per-CPU nature of the hardware, all outgoing TTY data is
written out from a kthread which is pinned to the appropriate CPU.
The console is not bound to a specific CPU, so output will appear on the
chosen channel on whichever CPU the code is executing on. Enable with
e.g. console=fdc1 in kernel arguments. /dev/console is bound to the same
channel on the boot CPU's FDC if it exists.

ehv_bytechan is marked tristate but fails to build as a module:
