2024-05-07net: annotate writes on dev->mtu from ndo_change_mtu()Eric Dumazet1-2/+2
Simon reported that ndo_change_mtu() methods were never updated to use WRITE_ONCE(dev->mtu, new_mtu) as hinted in commit 501a90c94510 ("inet: protect against too small mtu values.") We read dev->mtu without holding RTNL in many places, with READ_ONCE() annotations. 2024-04-08net: handle HAS_IOPORT dependenciesNiklas Schnelle1-0/+1
In a future patch HAS_IOPORT=n will disable inb()/outb() and friends at compile time. We thus need to add HAS_IOPORT as dependency for those drivers requiring them. For the DEFXX driver the use of I/O ports is optional and we only need to fence specific code paths. It also turns out that with HAS_IOPORT handled explicitly HAMRADIO does not need the !S390 dependency and successfully builds the bpqether driver. 2023-09-20net: ethernet: via: Convert to platform remove callback returning voidUwe Kleine-König2-8/+4
The .remove() callback for a platform driver returns an int which makes many driver authors wrongly assume it's possible to do error handling by returning an error code. However the value returned is ignored (apart from emitting a warning) and this typically results in resource leaks. To improve here there is a quest to make the remove callback return void. In the first step of this quest all drivers are converted to .remove_new() which already returns void. Eventually after all drivers are converted, .remove_new() is renamed to .remove(). 2023-07-27net: Explicitly include correct DT includesRob Herring2-2/+2
The DT of_device.h and of_platform.h date back to the separate of_platform_bus_type before it as merged into the regular platform bus. As part of that merge prepping Arm DT support 13 years ago, they "temporarily" include each other. They also include platform_device.h and of.h. As a result, there's a pretty much random mix of those include files used throughout the tree. In order to detangle these headers and replace the implicit includes with struct declarations, users need to explicitly include the correct includes. Most users of ndo_do_ioctl are ethernet drivers that implement the MII commands SIOCGMIIPHY/SIOCGMIIREG/SIOCSMIIREG, or hardware timestamping with SIOCSHWTSTAMP/SIOCGHWTSTAMP. Separate these from the few drivers that use ndo_do_ioctl to implement SIOCBOND, SIOCBR and SIOCWANDEV commands. This is a purely cosmetic change intended to help readers find their way through the implementation. 2020-09-29via-rhine: Fix for the hardware having a reset failure after resumeKevin Brace1-0/+2
In rhine_resume() and rhine_suspend(), the code calls netif_running() to see if the network interface is down or not. If it is down (i.e., netif_running() returning false), they will skip any housekeeping work within the function relating to the hardware. This becomes a problem when the hardware resumes from a standby since it is counting on rhine_resume() to map its MMIO and power up rest of the hardware. Not getting its MMIO remapped and rest of the hardware powered up lead to a soft reset failure and hardware disappearance. The solution is to map its MMIO and power up rest of the hardware inside rhine_open() before soft reset is to be performed. This solution was verified on ASUS P5V800-VM mainboard's integrated Rhine-II Ethernet MAC inside VIA Technologies VT8251 South Bridge. As part of the W=1 cleanups for ethernet, a million [*] driver comments had to be cleaned up to get the W=1 compilation to succeed. This change finally makes the drivers/net/ethernet tree compile with W=1 set on the command line. NOTE: The kernel uses kdoc style (see Documentation/process/kernel-doc.rst) when documenting code, not doxygen or other styles. After this patch the x86_64 build has no warnings from W=1, however scripts/kernel-doc says there are 1545 more warnings in source files, that I need to develop a script to fix in a followup patch. Since commit 84af7a6194e4 ("checkpatch: kconfig: prefer 'help' over '---help---'"), the number of '---help---' has been gradually decreasing, but there are still more than 2400 instances. This commit finishes the conversion. While I touched the lines, I also fixed the indentation. 2020-01-06via-velocity: allow nesting of ethtool_ops begin() and complete()Michal Kubecek2-4/+11
Unlike most networking drivers using begin() and complete() ethtool_ops callbacks to resume a device which is down and suspend it again when done, via-velocity does not use standard refcounted infrastructure but sets device sleep state directly. With the introduction of netlink ethtool interface, we may have nested begin-complete blocks so that inner complete() would put the device back to sleep for the rest of the outer block. To avoid rewriting an old and not very actively developed driver, just add a nesting counter and only perform resume and suspend on the outermost level. This allows incrementing the correct timeout statistic without any mess. Down the road, devices can learn to reset just the specific queue. mmiowb() is now implied by spin_unlock() on architectures that require it, so there is no reason to call it from driver code. This patch was generated using coccinelle: @mmiowb@ @@ - mmiowb(); and invoked as: $ for d in drivers include/linux/qed sound; do \ spatch --include-headers --sp-file mmiowb.cocci --dir $d --in-place; done NOTE: mmiowb() has only ever guaranteed ordering in conjunction with spin_unlock(). However, pairing each mmiowb() removal in this patch with the corresponding call to spin_unlock() is not at all trivial, so there is a small chance that this change may regress any drivers incorrectly relying on mmiowb() to order MMIO writes between CPUs using lock-free synchronisation. If you've ended up bisecting to this commit, you can reintroduce the mmiowb() calls using wmb() instead, which should restore the old behaviour on all architectures other than some esoteric ia64 systems. 2016-10-13net: deprecate eth_change_mtu, remove usageJarod Wilson1-1/+0
With centralized MTU checking, there's nothing productive done by eth_change_mtu that isn't already done in dev_set_mtu, so mark it as deprecated and remove all usage of it in the kernel. All callers have been audited for calls to alloc_etherdev* or ether_setup directly, which means they all have a valid dev->min_mtu and dev->max_mtu. Now eth_change_mtu prints out a netdev_warn about being deprecated, for the benefit of out-of-tree drivers that might be utilizing it. Of note, dvb_net.c actually had dev->mtu = 4096, while using eth_change_mtu, meaning that if you ever tried changing it's mtu, you couldn't set it above 1500 anymore.
