Every architecture that supports NUMA defines node_data in the same way:
struct pglist_data *node_data[MAX_NUMNODES];
No reason to keep multiple copies of this definition and its forward
declarations, especially when such forward declaration is the only thing
in include/asm/mmzone.h for many architectures.
Add definition and declaration of node_data to generic code and drop
architecture-specific versions.

Commits ffb1b4a41016 ("x86/unwind/orc: Add 'signal' field to ORC
metadata") and fb799447ae29 ("x86,objtool: Split UNWIND_HINT_EMPTY in
two") changed the ORC format. Although ORC is internal to the kernel,
it's the only way for external tools to get reliable kernel stack traces
on x86-64. In particular, the drgn debugger [1] uses ORC for stack
unwinding, and these format changes broke it [2]. As the drgn
maintainer, I don't care how often or how much the kernel changes the
ORC format as long as I have a way to detect the change.
It suffices to store a version identifier in the vmlinux and kernel
module ELF files (to use when parsing ORC sections from ELF), and in
kernel memory (to use when parsing ORC from a core dump+symbol table).
Rather than hard-coding a version number that needs to be manually
bumped, Peterz suggested hashing the definitions from orc_types.h. If
there is a format change that isn't caught by this, the hashing script
can be updated.
This patch adds an .orc_header allocated ELF section containing the
20-byte hash to vmlinux and kernel modules, along with the corresponding
__start_orc_header and __stop_orc_header symbols in vmlinux.

Many architectures duplicate similar shell scripts.
Convert x86 and UML to use scripts/syscalltbl.sh. The generic script
generates seperate headers for x86/64 and x86/x32 syscalls, while the x86

Change a header to mandatory-y if both of the following are met:
[1] At least one architecture (except um) specifies it as generic-y in
arch/*/include/asm/Kbuild
[2] Every architecture (except um) either has its own implementation
(arch/*/include/asm/*.h) or specifies it as generic-y in
arch/*/include/asm/Kbuild
This commit was generated by the following shell script.
----------------------------------->8-----------------------------------
arches=$(cd arch; ls -1 | sed -e '/Kconfig/d' -e '/um/d')
tmpfile=$(mktemp)
grep "^mandatory-y +=" include/asm-generic/Kbuild > $tmpfile
find arch -path 'arch/*/include/asm/Kbuild' |
xargs sed -n 's/^generic-y += \(.*\)/\1/p' | sort -u |
while read header
do
mandatory=yes
for arch in $arches
do
if ! grep -q "generic-y += $header" arch/$arch/include/asm/Kbuild &&
! [ -f arch/$arch/include/asm/$header ]; then
mandatory=no
break
fi
done
if [ "$mandatory" = yes ]; then
echo "mandatory-y += $header" >> $tmpfile
for arch in $arches
do
sed -i "/generic-y += $header/d" arch/$arch/include/asm/Kbuild
done
fi
done
sed -i '/^mandatory-y +=/d' include/asm-generic/Kbuild
LANG=C sort $tmpfile >> include/asm-generic/Kbuild
----------------------------------->8-----------------------------------
One obvious benefit is the diff stat:
25 files changed, 52 insertions(+), 557 deletions(-)
It is tedious to list generic-y for each arch that needs it.
So, mandatory-y works like a fallback default (by just wrapping
asm-generic one) when arch does not have a specific header
implementation.

An ordinary arm64 defconfig build has ~64 KB worth of __ksymtab entries,
each consisting of two 64-bit fields containing absolute references, to
the symbol itself and to a char array containing its name, respectively.
When we build the same configuration with KASLR enabled, we end up with an
additional ~192 KB of relocations in the .init section, i.e., one 24 byte
entry for each absolute reference, which all need to be processed at boot
time.
Given how the struct kernel_symbol that describes each entry is completely
local to module.c (except for the references emitted by EXPORT_SYMBOL()
itself), we can easily modify it to contain two 32-bit relative references
instead. This reduces the size of the __ksymtab section by 50% for all
64-bit architectures, and gets rid of the runtime relocations entirely for
architectures implementing KASLR, either via standard PIE linking (arm64)
or using custom host tools (x86).
Note that the binary search involving __ksymtab contents relies on each
section being sorted by symbol name. This is implemented based on the
input section names, not the names in the ksymtab entries, so this patch
does not interfere with that.
Given that the use of place-relative relocations requires support both in
the toolchain and in the module loader, we cannot enable this feature for
all architectures. So make it dependent on whether
CONFIG_HAVE_ARCH_PREL32_RELOCATIONS is defined.

cputime_t is now only used by two architectures:
* powerpc (when CONFIG_VIRT_CPU_ACCOUNTING_NATIVE=y)
* s390
And since the core doesn't use it anymore, we don't need any arch support
from the others. So we can remove their stub implementations.
A final cleanup would be to provide an efficient pure arch
implementation of cputime_to_nsec() for s390 and powerpc and finally
remove include/linux/cputime.h .

In x86's include/asm/Kbuild three entries are appended to the genhdr-y make
variable:
genhdr-y += unistd_32.h
genhdr-y += unistd_64.h
genhdr-y += unistd_x32.h
The same entries are also appended to that variable in
include/uapi/asm/Kbuild. So commit:
10b63956fce7 ("UAPI: Plumb the UAPI Kbuilds into the user header installation and checking")
... removed these three entries from include/asm/Kbuild. But, apparently, some
merge conflict resolution re-added them.
The net effect is, in short, that the genhdr-y make variable contains these
file names twice and, as a consequence, that the corresponding headers get
installed twice. And so the build prints:
INSTALL usr/include/asm/ (65 files)
... while in reality only 62 files are installed in that directory.
Nothing breaks because of all that, but it's a good idea to finally remove
these unneeded entries nevertheless.

Track generated header files which aren't already in genhdr-y, alongside
generic-y wrappers in the */include/generated/[uapi/]asm/ directories.
Currently only x86 generates extra headers in these directories, for the
purposes of enumerating system calls for different ABIs, and xen
hypercalls.
This will allow the asm-generic wrapper handling code to remove stale
wrappers when files are removed from generic-y, without also removing
these headers which are generated separately.

Commit 2ae416b142b6 ("mm: new mm hook framework") introduced an empty
header file (mm-arch-hooks.h) for every architecture, even those which
doesn't need to define mm hooks.
As suggested by Geert Uytterhoeven, this could be cleaned through the use
of a generic header file included via each per architecture
asm/include/Kbuild file.
The PowerPC architecture is not impacted here since this architecture has
to defined the arch_remap MM hook.

Generate system call tables and unistd_*.h automatically from the
tables in arch/x86/syscalls. All other information, like NR_syscalls,
is auto-generated, some of which is in asm-offsets_*.c.
This allows us to keep all the system call information in one place,
and allows for kernel space and user space to see different
information; this is currently used for the ia32 system call numbers
when building the 64-bit kernel, but will be used by the x32 ABI in
the near future.
This also removes some gratuitious differences between i386, x86-64
and ia32; in particular, now all system call tables are generated with
the same mechanism.

This patch rebase the implementation of the breakpoints API on top of
perf events instances.
Each breakpoints are now perf events that handle the
register scheduling, thread/cpu attachment, etc..
The new layering is now made as follows:
ptrace kgdb ftrace perf syscall
\ | / /
\ | / /
/
Core breakpoint API /
/
| /
| /
Breakpoints perf events
|
|
Breakpoints PMU ---- Debug Register constraints handling
(Part of core breakpoint API)
|
|
Hardware debug registers
Reasons of this rewrite:
- Use the centralized/optimized pmu registers scheduling,
implying an easier arch integration
- More powerful register handling: perf attributes (pinned/flexible
events, exclusive/non-exclusive, tunable period, etc...)
Impact:
- New perf ABI: the hardware breakpoints counters
- Ptrace breakpoints setting remains tricky and still needs some per
thread breakpoints references.
Todo (in the order):
- Support breakpoints perf counter events for perf tools (ie: implement
perf_bpcounter_event())
- Support from perf tools
Changes in v2:
- Follow the perf "event " rename
- The ptrace regression have been fixed (ptrace breakpoint perf events
weren't released when a task ended)
- Drop the struct hw_breakpoint and store generic fields in
perf_event_attr.
- Separate core and arch specific headers, drop
asm-generic/hw_breakpoint.h and create linux/hw_breakpoint.h
- Use new generic len/type for breakpoint
- Handle off case: when breakpoints api is not supported by an arch
Changes in v3:
- Fix broken CONFIG_KVM, we need to propagate the breakpoint api
changes to kvm when we exit the guest and restore the bp registers
to the host.
Changes in v4:
- Drop the hw_breakpoint_restore() stub as it is only used by KVM
- EXPORT_SYMBOL_GPL hw_breakpoint_restore() as KVM can be built as a
module
- Restore the breakpoints unconditionally on kvm guest exit:
TIF_DEBUG_THREAD doesn't anymore cover every cases of running
breakpoints and vcpu->arch.switch_db_regs might not always be
set when the guest used debug registers.
(Waiting for a reliable optimization)
Changes in v5:
- Split-up the asm-generic/hw-breakpoint.h moving to
linux/hw_breakpoint.h into a separate patch
- Optimize the breakpoints restoring while switching from kvm guest
to host. We only want to restore the state if we have active
breakpoints to the host, otherwise we don't care about messed-up
address registers.
- Add asm/hw_breakpoint.h to Kbuild
- Fix bad breakpoint type in trace_selftest.c
Changes in v6:
- Fix wrong header inclusion in trace.h (triggered a build
error with CONFIG_FTRACE_SELFTEST
