2023-09-22hardening: Provide Kconfig fragments for basic optionsKees Cook1-0/+15
Inspired by Salvatore Mesoraca's earlier[1] efforts to provide some in-tree guidance for kernel hardening Kconfig options, add a new fragment named "hardening-basic.config" (along with some arch-specific fragments) that enable a basic set of kernel hardening options that have the least (or no) performance impact and remove a reasonable set of legacy APIs. Using this fragment is as simple as running "make hardening.config". More extreme fragments can be added[2] in the future to cover all the recognized hardening options, and more per-architecture files can be added too. For now, document the fragments directly via comments. Perhaps .rst documentation can be generated from them in the future (rather than the other way around). Commit a2225d931f75 ("autofs: remove left-over autofs4 stubs") promised the removal of the fs/autofs/Kconfig fragment for AUTOFS4_FS within a couple of releases, but five years later this still has not happened yet, and AUTOFS4_FS is still enabled in 63 defconfigs. Get rid of it mechanically: git grep -l CONFIG_AUTOFS4_FS -- '*defconfig' | xargs sed -i 's/AUTOFS4_FS/AUTOFS_FS/' Also just remove the AUTOFS4_FS config option stub. Anybody who hasn't regenerated their config file in the last five years will need to just get the new name right when they do. Commit c70727a5bc18 ("xen: allow more than 512 GB of RAM for 64 bit pv-domains") from July 2015 replaces the config XEN_MAX_DOMAIN_MEMORY with a new config XEN_512GB, but misses to adjust arch/x86/configs/xen.config. As XEN_512GB defaults to yes, there is no need to explicitly set any config in xen.config. Just remove setting the obsolete config XEN_MAX_DOMAIN_MEMORY. 2022-06-24efi: vars: Remove deprecated 'efivars' sysfs interfaceArd Biesheuvel2-2/+0
Commit 5d9db883761a ("efi: Add support for a UEFI variable filesystem") dated Oct 5, 2012, introduced a new efivarfs pseudo-filesystem to replace the efivars sysfs interface that was used up to that point to expose EFI variables to user space. The main problem with the sysfs interface was that it only supported up to 1024 bytes of payload per file, whereas the underlying variables themselves are only bounded by a platform specific per-variable and global limit that is typically much higher than 1024 bytes. The deprecated sysfs interface is only enabled on x86 and Itanium, other EFI enabled architectures only support the efivarfs pseudo-filesystem. So let's finally rip off the band aid, and drop the old interface entirely. This will make it easier to refactor and clean up the underlying infrastructure that is shared between efivars, efivarfs and efi-pstore, and is long overdue for a makeover. 2020-09-14vgacon: remove software scrollback supportLinus Torvalds2-2/+0
Yunhai Zhang recently fixed a VGA software scrollback bug in commit ebfdfeeae8c0 ("vgacon: Fix for missing check in scrollback handling"), but that then made people look more closely at some of this code, and there were more problems on the vgacon side, but also the fbcon software scrollback. We don't really have anybody who maintains this code - probably because nobody actually _uses_ it any more. Sure, people still use both VGA and the framebuffer consoles, but they are no longer the main user interfaces to the kernel, and haven't been for decades, so these kinds of extra features end up bitrotting and not really being used. So rather than try to maintain a likely unused set of code, I'll just aggressively remove it, and see if anybody even notices. Maybe there are people who haven't jumped on the whole GUI badnwagon yet, and think it's just a fad. And maybe those people use the scrollback code. If that turns out to be the case, we can resurrect this again, once we've found the sucker^Wmaintainer for it who actually uses it. A recent refresh of the defconfigs got rid of the following (unset) config: # CONFIG_64BIT is not set Innocuous as it seems, when the config file is saved again the behavior is changed so that CONFIG_64BIT=y. This kernel configuration is basically enabling/disabling sr driver quirks detection. While these quirks are for fairly rare devices (very old CD burners, and a glucometer), the additional detection of these models is a very minimal amount of code. The logic behind the quirks is always built into the sr driver. This also removes the config from all the defconfig files that are enabling this already. It is disabled since commit 1be01d4a5714 ("driver: base: Disable CONFIG_UEVENT_HELPER by default") as its dependency (UEVENT_HELPER) was made default to 'n', 2. It is not recommended (help message: "This should not be used today [...] creates a high system load") and was kept only for ancient userland, 3. Certain userland specifically requests it to be disabled (systemd README: "Legacy hotplug slows down the system and confuses udev").
