2024-03-28drm/display: Make DisplayPort CEC-over-AUX Kconfig name consistentMaxime Ripard1-1/+1
While most display helpers Kconfig symbols have the DRM_DISPLAY prefix, the DisplayPort CEC tunnelling implementation uses CONFIG_DRM_DISPLAY_DP_AUX_CEC. Since the number of users is limited, we can easily rename it to make it consistent. 2023-10-21staging: qlge: Retire the driverBenjamin Poirier1-1/+0
No significant improvements have been done to this driver since commit a7c3ddf29a78 ("staging: qlge: clean up debugging code in the QL_ALL_DUMP ifdef land") in January 2021. The driver should not stay in staging forever. Since it has been abandoned by the vendor and no one has stepped up to maintain it, delete it. If some users manifest themselves, the driver will be restored to drivers/net/ as suggested in the linked message. Commit a2225d931f75 ("autofs: remove left-over autofs4 stubs") promised the removal of the fs/autofs/Kconfig fragment for AUTOFS4_FS within a couple of releases, but five years later this still has not happened yet, and AUTOFS4_FS is still enabled in 63 defconfigs. Get rid of it mechanically: git grep -l CONFIG_AUTOFS4_FS -- '*defconfig' | xargs sed -i 's/AUTOFS4_FS/AUTOFS_FS/' Also just remove the AUTOFS4_FS config option stub. Anybody who hasn't regenerated their config file in the last five years will need to just get the new name right when they do. As discussed at LSF/MM [1] [2] and with no objections raised there, deprecate the SLAB allocator. Rename the user-visible option so that users with CONFIG_SLAB=y get a new prompt with explanation during make oldconfig, while make olddefconfig will just switch to SLUB. In all defconfigs with CONFIG_SLAB=y remove the line so those also switch to SLUB. Regressions due to the switch should be reported to linux-mm and slab maintainers. 2019-11-26sysctl: Remove the sysctl system callEric W. Biederman2-2/+0
This system call has been deprecated almost since it was introduced, and in a survey of the linux distributions I can no longer find any of them that enable CONFIG_SYSCTL_SYSCALL. The only indication that I can find that anyone might care is that a few of the defconfigs in the kernel enable CONFIG_SYSCTL_SYSCALL. However this appears in only 31 of 414 defconfigs in the kernel, so I suspect this symbols presence is simply because it is harmless to include rather than because it is necessary. As there appear to be no users of the sysctl system call, remove the code. As this removes one of the few uses of the internal kernel mount of proc I hope this allows for even more simplifications of the proc filesystem. Commit 5318321d367c ("samples: disable CONFIG_SAMPLES for UML") used a big hammer to fix the build errors under the samples/ directory. Only some samples actually include uapi headers from usr/include. Introduce CONFIG_HEADERS_INSTALL since 'depends on HEADERS_INSTALL' is clearer than 'depends on !UML'. If this option is enabled, uapi headers are installed before starting directory descending. I added 'depends on HEADERS_INSTALL' to per-sample CONFIG options. It is not recommended (help message: "This should not be used today [...] creates a high system load") and was kept only for ancient userland, 3. Certain userland specifically requests it to be disabled (systemd README: "Legacy hotplug slows down the system and confuses udev"). 2019-04-06block: remove CONFIG_LBDAFChristoph Hellwig1-1/+0
Currently support for 64-bit sector_t and blkcnt_t is optional on 32-bit architectures. These types are required to support block device and/or file sizes larger than 2 TiB, and have generally defaulted to on for a long time. Enabling the option only increases the i386 tinyconfig size by 145 bytes, and many data structures already always use 64-bit values for their in-core and on-disk data structures anyway, so there should not be a large change in dynamic memory usage either. Dropping this option removes a somewhat weird non-default config that has cause various bugs or compiler warnings when actually used. 2016-08-30mm/usercopy: get rid of CONFIG_DEBUG_STRICT_USER_COPY_CHECKSJosh Poimboeuf2-2/+0
There are three usercopy warnings which are currently being silenced for gcc 4.6 and newer: 1) "copy_from_user() buffer size is too small" compile warning/error This is a static warning which happens when object size and copy size are both const, and copy size > object size. I didn't see any false positives for this one. So the function warning attribute seems to be working fine here. Note this scenario is always a bug and so I think it should be changed to *always* be an error, regardless of CONFIG_DEBUG_STRICT_USER_COPY_CHECKS. 2) "copy_from_user() buffer size is not provably correct" compile warning This is another static warning which happens when I enable __compiletime_object_size() for new compilers (and CONFIG_DEBUG_STRICT_USER_COPY_CHECKS). It happens when object size is const, but copy size is *not*. In this case there's no way to compare the two at build time, so it gives the warning. (Note the warning is a byproduct of the fact that gcc has no way of knowing whether the overflow function will be called, so the call isn't dead code and the warning attribute is activated.) So this warning seems to only indicate "this is an unusual pattern, maybe you should check it out" rather than "this is a bug". I get 102(!) of these warnings with allyesconfig and the __compiletime_object_size() gcc check removed. I don't know if there are any real bugs hiding in there, but from looking at a small sample, I didn't see any. According to Kees, it does sometimes find real bugs. But the false positive rate seems high. 3) "Buffer overflow detected" runtime warning This is a runtime warning where object size is const, and copy size > object size. All three warnings (both static and runtime) were completely disabled for gcc 4.6 with the following commit: 2fb0815c9ee6 ("gcc4: disable __compiletime_object_size for GCC 4.6+") That commit mistakenly assumed that the false positives were caused by a gcc bug in __compiletime_object_size(). But in fact, __compiletime_object_size() seems to be working fine. The false positives were instead triggered by #2 above. (Though I don't have an explanation for why the warnings supposedly only started showing up in gcc 4.6.) So remove warning #2 to get rid of all the false positives, and re-enable warnings #1 and #3 by reverting the above commit. Furthermore, since #1 is a real bug which is detected at compile time, upgrade it to always be an error. Having done all that, CONFIG_DEBUG_STRICT_USER_COPY_CHECKS is no longer needed. The driver hasn't been cleaned up and it doesn't look like anyone is working on it anymore (including the original author). So remove it. If someone wants to work on cleaning the driver up and moving it out of staging, this commit can be reverted. 2011-01-20kconfig: rename CONFIG_EMBEDDED to CONFIG_EXPERTDavid Rientjes2-2/+2
The meaning of CONFIG_EMBEDDED has long since been obsoleted; the option is used to configure any non-standard kernel with a much larger scope than only small devices. This patch renames the option to CONFIG_EXPERT in init/Kconfig and fixes references to the option throughout the kernel. A new CONFIG_EMBEDDED option is added that automatically selects CONFIG_EXPERT when enabled and can be used in the future to isolate options that should only be considered for embedded systems (RISC architectures, SLOB, etc). Calling the option "EXPERT" more accurately represents its intention: only expert users who understand the impact of the configuration changes they are making should enable it. Both old-IDE and libata should be able handle all controllers and devices found using normal resource reservation methods. This eliminates the awful, low-performing split-driver configuration where old-IDE drove the PATA portion of a PCI device, in PIO-only mode, and libata drove the SATA portion of the /same/ PCI device, in DMA mode. Typically vendors would ship SATA hard drive / PATA optical configuration, which would lend itself to slow (PIO-only) CD-ROM performance. For Intel users running in combined mode, it is now wholly dependent on your driver choice (potentially link order, if you compile both drivers in) whether old-IDE or libata will drive your hardware. In either case, you will get full performance from both SATA and PATA ports now, without having to pass a kernel command line parameter. Signed-off-by: Jeff Garzik <[email protected]>
