2024-10-28mseal: update mseal.rstJeff Xu1-159/+148
Pedro Falcato's optimization [1] for checking sealed VMAs, which replaces the can_modify_mm() function with an in-loop check, necessitates an update to the mseal.rst documentation to reflect this change. Furthermore, the document has received offline comments regarding the code sample and suggestions for sentence clarification to enhance reader comprehension. [1] https://lore.kernel.org/linux-mm/20240817-mseal-depessimize-v3-0-d8d2e037df30@gmail.com/ Update doc after in-loop change: mprotect/madvise can have partially updated and munmap is atomic. Fix indentation and clarify some sections to improve readability. The LANDLOCK_SCOPE_ABSTRACT_UNIX_SOCKET flag denies connections to an abstract UNIX socket created outside of the current scoped domain, and the LANDLOCK_SCOPE_SIGNAL flag denies sending a signal to processes outside of the current scoped domain. 2024-08-12media: uapi: videodev2: Add V4L2_META_FMT_RK_ISP1_EXT_PARAMSJacopo Mondi1-9/+48
The rkisp1 driver stores ISP configuration parameters in the fixed rkisp1_params_cfg structure. As the members of the structure are part of the userspace API, the structure layout is immutable and cannot be extended further. Introducing new parameters or modifying the existing ones would change the buffer layout and cause breakages in existing applications. The allow for future extensions to the ISP parameters, introduce a new extensible parameters format, with a new format 4CC. Document usage of the new format in the rkisp1 admin guide. 2024-08-05media: cec: core: add new CEC_MSG_FL_REPLY_VENDOR_ID flagHans Verkuil2-0/+21
If this flag is set, then the reply is expected to consist of the CEC_MSG_VENDOR_COMMAND_WITH_ID opcode followed by the Vendor ID (as used in bytes 1-4 of the message), followed by the struct cec_msg reply field. Note that this assumes that the byte after the Vendor ID is a vendor-specific opcode. This flag makes it easier to wait for replies to vendor commands, using the same CEC framework support for waiting for regular replies. Support for this flag is indicated by setting the new CEC_CAP_REPLY_VENDOR_ID capability. Adds a misc driver for Marvell CN10K DPI(DMA Engine) device's physical function which initializes DPI DMA hardware's global configuration and enables hardware mailbox channels between physical function (PF) and it's virtual functions (VF). VF device drivers (User space drivers) use this hw mailbox to communicate any required device configuration on it's respective VF device. Accordingly, this DPI PF driver provisions the VF device resources. At the hardware level, the DPI physical function (PF) acts as a management interface to setup the VF device resources, VF devices are only provisioned to handle or control the actual DMA Engine's data transfer capabilities. 2024-06-15mm/memfd: add documentation for MFD_NOEXEC_SEAL MFD_EXECJeff Xu2-0/+87
When MFD_NOEXEC_SEAL was introduced, there was one big mistake: it didn't have proper documentation. This led to a lot of confusion, especially about whether or not memfd created with the MFD_NOEXEC_SEAL flag is sealable. Before MFD_NOEXEC_SEAL, memfd had to explicitly set MFD_ALLOW_SEALING to be sealable, so it's a fair question. As one might have noticed, unlike other flags in memfd_create, MFD_NOEXEC_SEAL is actually a combination of multiple flags. The idea is to make it easier to use memfd in the most common way, which is NOEXEC + F_SEAL_EXEC + MFD_ALLOW_SEALING. This works with sysctl vm.noexec to help existing applications move to a more secure way of using memfd. Proposals have been made to put MFD_NOEXEC_SEAL non-sealable, unless MFD_ALLOW_SEALING is set, to be consistent with other flags [1], Those are based on the viewpoint that each flag is an atomic unit, which is a reasonable assumption. However, MFD_NOEXEC_SEAL was designed with the intent of promoting the most secure method of using memfd, therefore a combination of multiple functionalities into one bit. Furthermore, the MFD_NOEXEC_SEAL has been added for more than one year, and multiple applications and distributions have backported and utilized it. Altering ABI now presents a degree of risk and may lead to disruption. MFD_NOEXEC_SEAL is a new flag, and applications must change their code to use it. There is no backward compatibility problem. When sysctl vm.noexec == 1 or 2, applications that don't set MFD_NOEXEC_SEAL or MFD_EXEC will get MFD_NOEXEC_SEAL memfd. And old-application might break, that is by-design, in such a system vm.noexec = 0 shall be used. Also no backward compatibility problem. I propose to include this documentation patch to assist in clarifying the semantics of MFD_NOEXEC_SEAL, thereby preventing any potential future confusion. Finally, I would like to express my gratitude to David Rheinsberg and Barnabás Pőcze for initiating the discussion on the topic of sealability. 2024-06-10docs: gpio: prefer pread(2) for interrupt readingHuichun Feng1-3/+4
In legacy sysfs GPIO, when using poll(2) on the sysfs GPIO value for state change awaiting, a subsequent read(2) is required for consuming the event, which the doc recommends the use of lseek(2) or close-and-reopen to reset the file offset afterwards. The recommendations however, require at least 2 syscalls to consume the event. Gladly, use of pread(2) require only 1 syscall for the consumption. Let's advertise this usage by prioritizing its placement.
