2021-03-06perf daemon: Fix running test for non root userJiri Olsa1-16/+16
John reported that the daemon test is not working for non root user. Changing the tests configurations so it's allowed to run under normal user. 2021-03-02perf buildid-cache: Add test for PE executableNicholas Fraser1-7/+58
This builds on the previous changes to tests/shell/buildid.sh, adding tests for a PE file. It adds it to the build-id cache manually and, if Wine is available, runs it under "perf record" and verifies that it was added automatically. If wine is not installed, only warnings are printed; the test can still exit 0. 2021-02-18perf buildid-cache: Add test for 16-byte build-idNicholas Fraser1-0/+6
tests/shell/buildid.sh added an ELF executable with an MD5 build-id to the perf debug cache but did not check whether the object was printed by a subsequent call to "perf buildid-cache -l". It was being omitted from the list. A previous commit fixed the bug that left it out of the list. This adds a test for it. 2021-02-18perf test: Output the sub testing result in cs-etmLeo Yan1-10/+14
The CoreSight testing contains sub cases, e.g. every CPU iterates the possible conntected sinks and tests the paths between the associated ETM with the found sink. Besides the per-thread testing, it also contains system wide testing and snapshot testing. To easier observe results for the sub cases, this patch introduces a new function arm_cs_report(), it outputs the result as "PASS" or "FAIL" for every sub case; and it records the error in the variable "glb_err" which is used as the final return value when exits the testing. Before: # perf test 73 -v 73: Check Arm CoreSight trace data recording and synthesized samples: --- start --- test child forked, pid 17423 Recording trace (only user mode) with path: CPU0 => tmc_etf0 Looking at perf.data file for dumping branch samples: Looking at perf.data file for reporting branch samples: Looking at perf.data file for instruction samples: Recording trace (only user mode) with path: CPU0 => tmc_etr0 Looking at perf.data file for dumping branch samples: Looking at perf.data file for reporting branch samples: Looking at perf.data file for instruction samples: [...] After: # perf test 73 -v 73: Check Arm CoreSight trace data recording and synthesized samples: --- start --- test child forked, pid 17423 Recording trace (only user mode) with path: CPU0 => tmc_etf0 Looking at perf.data file for dumping branch samples: Looking at perf.data file for reporting branch samples: Looking at perf.data file for instruction samples: CoreSight path testing (CPU0 -> tmc_etf0): PASS Recording trace (only user mode) with path: CPU0 => tmc_etr0 Looking at perf.data file for dumping branch samples: Looking at perf.data file for reporting branch samples: Looking at perf.data file for instruction samples: CoreSight path testing (CPU0 -> tmc_etr0): PASS [...] Signed-off-by: Leo Yan <[email protected]> Cc: Alexander Shishkin <[email protected]> Cc: Basil Eljuse <[email protected]> Cc: Jiri Olsa <[email protected]> Cc: Mark Rutland <[email protected]> Cc: Mathieu Poirier <[email protected]> Cc: Mike Leach <[email protected]> Cc: Namhyung Kim <[email protected]> Cc: Naresh Kamboju <[email protected]> Cc: Peter Zijlstra <[email protected]> Cc: Suzuki Poulouse <[email protected]> Cc: Viresh Kumar <[email protected]> Link: http://lore.kernel.org/lkml/[email protected] Signed-off-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <[email protected]>
2021-02-18perf test: Suppress logs in cs-etm testingLeo Yan1-12/+9
With the option '-v' for the verbose logs, "perf test" outputs tons of logs for the CoreSight case, the logs are mainly introduced by the decoding. And it outputs some trivial info from "perf record" command and there have debugging info for CPU number and device name when iterates between ETMs and sinks. For a neat output format, this patch redirects the output logs to "/dev/null", thus can avoid to flood logs. And it removes the redundant log for CPU number and device name, which have already printed out the relevant info in the function record_touch_file(). 2020-11-12perf test: Update branch sample pattern for cs-etmLeo Yan1-1/+1
Since the commit 943b69ac1884 ("perf parse-events: Set exclude_guest=1 for user-space counting"), 'exclude_guest=1' is set for user-space counting; and the branch sample's modifier has been altered, the sample event name has been changed from "branches:u:" to "branches:uH:", which gives out info for "user-space and host counting". But the cs-etm testing's regular expression cannot match the updated branch sample event and leads to test failure. This patch updates the branch sample pattern by using a more flexible expression '.*' to match branch sample's modifiers, so that allows the testing to work as expected. 2020-09-10perf test: Introduce script for Arm CoreSight testingLeo Yan1-0/+183
We need a simple method to test Perf with ARM CoreSight drivers, this could be used for smoke testing when new patch is coming for perf or CoreSight drivers, and we also can use the test to confirm if the CoreSight has been enabled successfully on new platforms. This patch introduces the shell script test_arm_coresight.sh which is under the 'pert test' framework. This script provides three testing scenarios: Test scenario 1: traverse all possible paths between source and sink For traversing possible paths, simply to say, the testing rationale is source oriented testing, it traverses every source (now only refers to ETM device) and test its all possible sinks. To search the complete paths from one specific source to its sinks, this patch relies on the sysfs '/sys/bus/coresight/devices/devX/out:Y' for depth-first search (DFS) for iteration connected device nodes, if the output device is detected as a sink device (the script will exclude TPIU device which can not be supported for perf PMU), then it will test trace data recording and decoding for it. The script runs three output testings for every trace data: - Test branch samples dumping with 'perf script' command; - Test branch samples reporting with 'perf report' command; - Use option '--itrace=i1000i' to insert synthesized instructions events and the script will check if perf can output the percentage value successfully based on the instruction samples. Test scenario 2: system-wide test For system-wide testing, it passes option '-a' to perf tool to enable tracing on all CPUs, so it's hard to say which program will be traced. But perf tool itself contributes much overload in this case, so it will parse trace data and check if process 'perf' can be detected or not. Test scenario 3: snapshot mode test. For snapshot mode testing, it uses 'dd' command to launch a long running program, so this can give chance to send signal -USR2; it will check the captured trace data contains 'dd' related thread info or not. If any test fails, it will report failure and directly exit with error. This test will be only applied on a platform with PMU event 'cs_etm//', otherwise will skip the testing. Below is detailed usage for it: # cd $linux/tools/perf -> This is important so can use shell script # perf test list [...] 70: probe libc's inet_pton & backtrace it with ping 71: Check Arm CoreSight trace data recording and synthesized samples 72: Check open filename arg using perf trace + vfs_getname 73: Zstd perf.data compression/decompression 74: Add vfs_getname probe to get syscall args filenames 75: Use vfs_getname probe to get syscall args filenames # perf test 71 71: Check Arm CoreSight trace data recording and branch samples: Ok Signed-off-by: Leo Yan <[email protected]> Reviewed-by: Mathieu Poirier <[email protected]> Reviewed-by: Suzuki Poulouse <[email protected]> Cc: Alexander Shishkin <[email protected]> Cc: Jiri Olsa <[email protected]> Cc: Mark Rutland <[email protected]> Cc: Mathieu Poirier <[email protected]> Cc: Mike Leach <[email protected]> Cc: Namhyung Kim <[email protected]> Cc: Peter Zijlstra <[email protected]> Link: http://lore.kernel.org/lkml/[email protected] Signed-off-by: Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo <[email protected]>
2020-08-13perf test: Allow multiple probes in record+script_probe_vfs_getname.shMichael Petlan1-2/+2
Sometimes when adding a kprobe by perf, it results in multiple probe points, such as the following: # ./perf probe -l probe:vfs_getname (on getname_flags:73@fs/namei.c with pathname) probe:vfs_getname_1 (on getname_flags:73@fs/namei.c with pathname) probe:vfs_getname_2 (on getname_flags:73@fs/namei.c with pathname) # cat /sys/kernel/debug/tracing/kprobe_events p:probe/vfs_getname _text+5501804 pathname=+0(+0(%gpr31)):string p:probe/vfs_getname_1 _text+5505388 pathname=+0(+0(%gpr31)):string p:probe/vfs_getname_2 _text+5508396 pathname=+0(+0(%gpr31)):string In this test, we need to record all of them and expect any of them in the perf-script output, since it's not clear which one will be used for the desired syscall: # perf stat -e probe:vfs_getname\* -- touch /tmp/nic Performance counter stats for 'touch /tmp/nic': 31 probe:vfs_getname_2 0 probe:vfs_getname_1 1 probe:vfs_getname 0.001421826 seconds time elapsed 0.001506000 seconds user 0.000000000 seconds sys If the test relies only on probe:vfs_getname, it might easily miss the relevant data. 2020-07-31perf tests: Fix test 68 zstd compression for s390Thomas Richter1-1/+2
Commit 5aa98879efe7 ("s390/cpum_sf: prohibit callchain data collection") prohibits call graph sampling for hardware events on s390. The information recorded is out of context and does not match. 2020-02-18perf test: Fix test trace+probe_vfs_getname.sh on s390Thomas Richter1-1/+1
This test places a kprobe to function getname_flags() in the kernel which has the following prototype: struct filename *getname_flags(const char __user *filename, int flags, int *empty) The 'filename' argument points to a filename located in user space memory. Looking at commit 88903c464321c ("tracing/probe: Add ustring type for user-space string") the kprobe should indicate that user space memory is accessed. Output before: [root@m35lp76 perf]# ./perf test 66 67 66: Use vfs_getname probe to get syscall args filenames : FAILED! 67: Check open filename arg using perf trace + vfs_getname: FAILED! [root@m35lp76 perf]# Output after: [root@m35lp76 perf]# ./perf test 66 67 66: Use vfs_getname probe to get syscall args filenames : Ok 67: Check open filename arg using perf trace + vfs_getname: Ok [root@m35lp76 perf]# Comments from Masami Hiramatsu: This bug doesn't happen on x86 or other archs on which user address space and kernel address space is the same. On some arches (ppc64 in this case?) user address space is partially or completely the same as kernel address space. (Yes, they switch the world when running into the kernel) In this case, we need to use different data access functions for each space. That is why I introduced the "ustring" type for kprobe events. As far as I can see, Thomas's patch is sane. Thomas, could you show us your result on your test environment? Comments from Thomas Richter: Test results for s/390 included above. Since the ip shown for a symbol is now always a virtual address, it becomes difficult to correlate this with objdump output and determine the exact instruction address. 2018-03-05perf tests: Switch trace+probe_libc_inet_pton to use recordJiri Olsa1-15/+15
There's a problem with relying on backtrace data from 'perf trace' the way the trace+probe_libc_inet_pton does. This test inserts uprobe within ping binary and checks that it gets its sample using 'perf trace'. It also checks it gets proper backtrace from sample and that's where the issue is. The 'perf trace' does not sort events (by definition) so it can happen that it processes the event sample before the ping binary memory map event. This can (very rarely) happen as proved by this events dump output (from custom added debug output): ... 7680/7680: [0x7f4e29718000(0x204000) @ 0 fd:00 33611321 4230892504]: r-xp /usr/lib64/libdl-2.17.so 7680/7680: [0x7f4e29502000(0x216000) @ 0 fd:00 33617257 2606846872]: r-xp /usr/lib64/libz.so.1.2.7 (IP, 0x2): 7680/7680: 0x7f4e29c2ed60 period: 1 addr: 0 7680/7680: [0x564842ef0000(0x233000) @ 0 fd:00 83 1989280200]: r-xp /usr/bin/ping 7680/7680: [0x7f4e2aca2000(0x224000) @ 0 fd:00 33611308 1219144940]: r-xp /usr/lib64/ld-2.17.so ... In this case 'perf trace' fails to resolve the last callchain IP (within the ping binary) because it does not know about the ping binary memory map yet and the test fails like this: PING ::1(::1) 56 data bytes 64 bytes from ::1: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.037 ms --- ::1 ping statistics --- 1 packets transmitted, 1 received, 0% packet loss, time 0ms rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 0.037/0.037/0.037/0.000 ms 0.000 probe_libc:inet_pton:(7f4e29c2ed60)) __GI___inet_pton (/usr/lib64/libc-2.17.so) getaddrinfo (/usr/lib64/libc-2.17.so) [0] ([unknown]) FAIL: expected backtrace entry 8 ".*\(.*/bin/ping.*\)$" got "[0] ([unknown])" Switching the test to use 'perf record' and 'perf script' instead of 'perf trace'. 2018-02-16perf tests shell lib: Use a wildcard to remove the vfs_getname probeArnaldo Carvalho de Melo1-1/+1
In some situations the vfs_getname is being added both as requested and with a _1 suffix (inlines?): probe:vfs_getname_1 (on getname_flags:63@acme/git/linux/fs/namei.c with pathname) This ends up making the cleanup to miss that one, as it removes just 'probe:vfs_getname', which makes the second test to use this probe point to fail, since it finds that leftover from the first test, use a wildcard to remove both. Commit f231af789b11 ("perf test shell: Fix check open filename arg using 'perf trace' on s390x") added an exception for s390x to use openat() instead of open() in the test that intercepts a open syscall to look for the filename argument as obtained by the vfs_getname 'perf probe' it puts in place at the getname_flags kernel function. Its not just s390x that uses openat() instead of open(), so use 'perf list' to look for the syscall:sys_enter_open(at)? present in the system being tested instead of checking if the system is s390x. In fact Namhyung pointed out that glibc 2.26 changed this behaviour, as described in https://lwn.net/Articles/738694/, so systems where glibc is >= 2.26 will need this patch for this test to work, which already took place in some distros for architectures such as s390x, while Fedora 26 x86_64 is at glibc 2.25, i.e. still uses open(). 2017-11-16perf test shell: Fix test case probe libc's inet_pton on s390xThomas Richter1-2/+5
The 'perf test' case "probe libc's inet_pton & backtrace it with ping" fails on s390x. The reason is the 'realpath /lib64/ld*.so.* | uniq' line which returns 2 libraries: root@s35lp76 shell]# realpath /lib64/ld*.so.* | uniq /usr/lib64/ld-2.26.so /usr/lib64/ld_pre_smc.so.1.0.1 [root@s35lp76 shell] This output makes the "perf probe" command lines invalid. Use ldd tool to find out the libraries required by "bash" and check if symbol "inet_pton" is part of the "libc" library. Some distros do not have a /lib64 directory. I have also added a check for the existence of an IPv6 network interface before it is being used. Committer changes: We can't really use ldd for libc, as in some systems, such as x86_64, it has hardlinks and then ldd sees one and the kernel the other, so grep for libc in /proc/self/maps to get the one we'll receive from PERF_RECORD_MMAP. Thomas checked this change and acked it. 2017-11-16perf test shell: Fix check open filename arg using 'perf trace' on s390xThomas Richter1-2/+4
This 'perf test' case fails on s390x. The 'touch' command on s390x uses the 'openat' system call to open the file named on the command line: [root@s35lp76 perf]# perf probe -l probe:vfs_getname (on getname_flags:72@fs/namei.c with pathname) [root@s35lp76 perf]# perf trace -e open touch /tmp/abc 0.400 ( 0.015 ms): touch/27542 open(filename: /usr/lib/locale/locale-archive, flags: CLOEXEC) = 3 [root@s35lp76 perf]# There is no 'open' system call for file '/tmp/abc'. Instead the 'openat' system call is used: [root@s35lp76 perf]# strace touch /tmp/abc execve("/usr/bin/touch", ["touch", "/tmp/abc"], 0x3ffd547ec98 /* 30 vars */) = 0 [...] openat(AT_FDCWD, "/tmp/abc", O_WRONLY|O_CREAT|O_NOCTTY|O_NONBLOCK, 0666) = 3 [...] On s390x the 'egrep' command does not find a matching pattern and returns an error. Fix this for s390x create a platform dependent command line to enable the 'perf probe' call to listen to the 'openat' system call and get the expected output.
