2023-08-30scsi: mpt3sas: Perform additional retries if doorbell read returns 0Ranjan Kumar2-13/+34
The driver retries certain register reads 3 times if the returned value is 0. This was done because the controller could return 0 for certain registers if other registers were being accessed concurrently by the BMC. In certain systems with increased BMC interactions, the register values returned can be 0 for longer than 3 retries. Change the retry count from 3 to 30 for the affected registers to prevent problems with out-of-band management. 2023-08-31drm/nouveau: fence: fix undefined fence state after emitDanilo Krummrich8-40/+45
nouveau_fence_emit() can fail before and after initializing the dma-fence and hence before and after initializing the dma-fence' kref. In order to avoid nouveau_fence_emit() potentially failing before dma-fence initialization pass the channel to nouveau_fence_new() already and perform the required check before even allocating the fence. While at it, restore the original behavior of nouveau_fence_new() and add nouveau_fence_create() for separate (pre-)allocation instead. Always splitting up allocation end emit wasn't a good idea in the first place. Hence, limit it to the places where we actually need to pre-allocate. 2023-08-30drm/i915: mark requests for GuC virtual engines to avoid use-after-freeAndrzej Hajda3-5/+6
References to i915_requests may be trapped by userspace inside a sync_file or dmabuf (dma-resv) and held indefinitely across different proceses. To counter-act the memory leaks, we try to not to keep references from the request past their completion. On the other side on fence release we need to know if rq->engine is valid and points to hw engine (true for non-virtual requests). To make it possible extra bit has been added to rq->execution_mask, for marking virtual engines. 2023-08-30s390/dcssblk: fix lockdep warningGerald Schaefer1-7/+6
dcssblk_remove_store() holds the dcssblk_devices_sem semaphore while calling del_gendisk(dev_info->gd), which in turn tries to acquire disk->open_mutex. Then there is dcssblk_release(), which is called with disk->open_mutex held, and tries to acquire dcssblk_devices_sem. Lockdep reports this as possible circular locking dependency (CPU0 = dcssblk_remove_store, CPU1 = dcssblk_release): [ 44.948865] Possible unsafe locking scenario: [ 44.948866] CPU0 CPU1 [ 44.948867] ---- ---- [ 44.948868] lock(&dcssblk_devices_sem); [ 44.948870] lock(&disk->open_mutex); [ 44.948872] lock(&dcssblk_devices_sem); [ 44.948874] lock(&disk->open_mutex); [ 44.948876] *** DEADLOCK *** In practice, this deadlock should not happen, since dcssblk_remove_store() checks for dev_info->use_count != 0 after acquiring dcssblk_devices_sem, and breaks out before calling del_gendisk(). dev_info->use_count will be decremented in dcssblk_release(), protected by dcssblk_devices_sem. Still there is no need for dcssblk_remove_store() to hold the dcssblk_devices_sem until after calling del_gendisk(), as this only protects dcssblk internal data. So fix the lockdep warning by releasing dcssblk_devices_sem earlier. Also move the segment_unload() loop up, similar to dcssblk_shared_store() error path, no need to do that after calling del_gendisk(). Also change dcssblk_shared_store() error path, where dcssblk_devices_sem was also released only after calling del_gendisk(), and a similar lockdep warning could be triggered (but also deadlock prevented by check for dev_info->use_count). git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/mcgrof/linux Pull sysctl updates from Luis Chamberlain: "Long ago we set out to remove the kitchen sink on kernel/sysctl.c arrays and placings sysctls to their own sybsystem or file to help avoid merge conflicts. Matthew Wilcox pointed out though that if we're going to do that we might as well also *save* space while at it and try to remove the extra last sysctl entry added at the end of each array, a sentintel, instead of bloating the kernel by adding a new sentinel with each array moved. Doing that was not so trivial, and has required slowing down the moves of kernel/sysctl.c arrays and measuring the impact on size by each new move. The complex part of the effort to help reduce the size of each sysctl is being done by the patient work of el señor Don Joel Granados. A lot of this is truly painful code refactoring and testing and then trying to measure the savings of each move and removing the sentinels. Although Joel already has code which does most of this work, experience with sysctl moves in the past shows is we need to be careful due to the slew of odd build failures that are possible due to the amount of random Kconfig options sysctls use. To that end Joel's work is split by first addressing the major housekeeping needed to remove the sentinels, which is part of this merge request. The rest of the work to actually remove the sentinels will be done later in future kernel releases. The preliminary math is showing this will all help reduce the overall build time size of the kernel and run time memory consumed by the kernel by about ~64 bytes per array where we are able to remove each sentinel in the future. That also means there is no more bloating the kernel with the extra ~64 bytes per array moved as no new sentinels are created" * tag 'sysctl-6.6-rc1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/mcgrof/linux: sysctl: Use ctl_table_size as stopping criteria for list macro sysctl: SIZE_MAX->ARRAY_SIZE in register_net_sysctl vrf: Update to register_net_sysctl_sz networking: Update to register_net_sysctl_sz netfilter: Update to register_net_sysctl_sz ax.25: Update to register_net_sysctl_sz sysctl: Add size to register_net_sysctl function sysctl: Add size arg to __register_sysctl_init sysctl: Add size to register_sysctl sysctl: Add a size arg to __register_sysctl_table sysctl: Add size argument to init_header sysctl: Add ctl_table_size to ctl_table_header sysctl: Use ctl_table_header in list_for_each_table_entry sysctl: Prefer ctl_table_header in proc_sysctl

git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/mcgrof/linux Pull modules updates from Luis Chamberlain: "Summary of the changes worth highlighting from most interesting to boring below: - Christoph Hellwig's symbol_get() fix to Nvidia's efforts to circumvent the protection he put in place in year 2020 to prevent proprietary modules from using GPL only symbols, and also ensuring proprietary modules which export symbols grandfather their taint. That was done through year 2020 commit 262e6ae7081d ("modules: inherit TAINT_PROPRIETARY_MODULE"). Christoph's new fix is done by clarifing __symbol_get() was only ever intended to prevent module reference loops by Linux kernel modules and so making it only find symbols exported via EXPORT_SYMBOL_GPL(). The circumvention tactic used by Nvidia was to use symbol_get() to purposely swift through proprietary module symbols and completely bypass our traditional EXPORT_SYMBOL*() annotations and community agreed upon restrictions. A small set of preamble patches fix up a few symbols which just needed adjusting for this on two modules, the rtc ds1685 and the networking enetc module. Two other modules just needed some build fixing and removal of use of __symbol_get() as they can't ever be modular, as was done by Arnd on the ARM pxa module and Christoph did on the mmc au1xmmc driver. This is a good reminder to us that symbol_get() is just a hack to address things which should be fixed through Kconfig at build time as was done in the later patches, and so ultimately it should just go. - Extremely late minor fix for old module layout 055f23b74b20 ("module: check for exit sections in layout_sections() instead of module_init_section()") by James Morse for arm64. Note that this layout thing is old, it is *not* Song Liu's commit ac3b43283923 ("module: replace module_layout with module_memory"). The issue however is very odd to run into and so there was no hurry to get this in fast. - Although the fix did not go through the modules tree I'd like to highlight the fix by Peter Zijlstra in commit 54097309620e ("x86/static_call: Fix __static_call_fixup()") now merged in your tree which came out of what was originally suspected to be a fallout of the the newer module layout changes by Song Liu commit ac3b43283923 ("module: replace module_layout with module_memory") instead of module_init_section()"). Thanks to the report by Christian Bricart and the debugging by Song Liu & Peter that turned to be noted as a kernel regression in place since v5.19 through commit ee88d363d156 ("x86,static_call: Use alternative RET encoding"). I highlight this to reflect and clarify that we haven't seen more fallout from ac3b43283923 ("module: replace module_layout with module_memory"). - RISC-V toolchain got mapping symbol support which prefix symbols with "$" to help with alignment considerations for disassembly. This is used to differentiate between incompatible instruction encodings when disassembling. RISC-V just matches what ARM/AARCH64 did for alignment considerations and Palmer Dabbelt extended is_mapping_symbol() to accept these symbols for RISC-V. We already had support for this for all architectures but it also checked for the second character, the RISC-V check Dabbelt added was just for the "$". After a bit of testing and fallout on linux-next and based on feedback from Masahiro Yamada it was decided to simplify the check and treat the first char "$" as unique for all architectures, and so we no make is_mapping_symbol() for all archs if the symbol starts with "$". The most relevant commit for this for RISC-V on binutils was: https://sourceware.org/pipermail/binutils/2021-July/117350.html - A late fix by Andrea Righi (today) to make module zstd decompression use vmalloc() instead of kmalloc() to account for large compressed modules. Since commit 3d5089c4263d ("of/address: Add support for 3 address cell bus"), the DT address functions can handle translating buses with 3 address cells. Replace the custom code with the for_each_of_range() iterator. The original code had fallbacks to get "#address-cells"/"#size-cells" from the bus parent node if they are missing. This is non-standard behavior, and AFAICT the upstream .dts files never relied on that. 2023-08-29cpufreq: Support per-policy performance boostJie Zhan1-0/+43
The boost control currently applies to the whole system. However, users may prefer to boost a subset of cores in order to provide prioritized performance to workloads running on the boosted cores. Enable per-policy boost by adding a 'boost' sysfs interface under each policy path. This can be found at: /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpufreq/policy<*>/boost Same to the global boost switch, writing 1/0 to the per-policy 'boost' enables/disables boost on a cpufreq policy respectively. The user view of global and per-policy boost controls should be: 1. Enabling global boost initially enables boost on all policies, and per-policy boost can then be enabled or disabled individually, given that the platform does support so. 2. Disabling global boost makes the per-policy boost interface illegal. Passing a struct thermal_trip pointer instead of a trip index to the .get_trend() thermal zone callback allows one of its 2 implementations, the thermal_get_trend() function in the ACPI thermal driver, to be simplified quite a bit, and the other implementation of it in the ti-soc-thermal driver does not even use the relevant callback argument. For this reason, change the .get_trend() thermal zone callback definition and adjust the related code accordingly. Signed-off-by: Rafael J. Wysocki <[email protected]>

After recent changes in the ACPI thermal driver and in the Intel DTS IOSF thermal driver, all thermal zone drivers are expected to use trip tables for initialization and none of them should implement .get_trip_type(), .get_trip_temp() or .get_trip_hyst() callbacks, so drop these callbacks entirely from the core. 2023-08-29cpufreq: Fix the race condition while updating the transition_task of policyLiao Chang1-0/+2
The field 'transition_task' of policy structure is used to track the task which is performing the frequency transition. Using this field to print a warning once detect a case where the same task is calling _begin() again before completing the preivous frequency transition via the _end(). However, there is a potential race condition in _end() and _begin() APIs while updating the field 'transition_task' of policy, the scenario is depicted below: Task A Task B /* 1st freq transition */ Invoke _begin() { ... ... } /* 2nd freq transition */ Invoke _begin() { ... //waiting for A to ... //clear ... //transition_ongoing ... //in _end() for ... //the 1st transition | Change the frequency | | Invoke _end() { | ... | ... | transition_ongoing = false; V transition_ongoing = true; transition_task = current; transition_task = NULL; ... //A overwrites the task ... //performing the transition ... //result in error warning. } To fix this race condition, the transition_lock of policy structure is now acquired before updating policy structure in _end() API. Which ensure that only one task can update the 'transition_task' field at a time.
