2020-02-26drm/bridge: Extend bridge API to disable connector creationLaurent Pinchart1-1/+1
Most bridge drivers create a DRM connector to model the connector at the output of the bridge. This model is historical and has worked pretty well so far, but causes several issues: - It prevents supporting more complex display pipelines where DRM connector operations are split over multiple components. For instance a pipeline with a bridge connected to the DDC signals to read EDID data, and another one connected to the HPD signal to detect connection and disconnection, will not be possible to support through this model. - It requires every bridge driver to implement similar connector handling code, resulting in code duplication. - It assumes that a bridge will either be wired to a connector or to another bridge, but doesn't support bridges that can be used in both positions very well (although there is some ad-hoc support for this in the analogix_dp bridge driver). In order to solve these issues, ownership of the connector should be moved to the display controller driver (where it can be implemented using helpers provided by the core). Extend the bridge API to allow disabling connector creation in bridge drivers as a first step towards the new model. The new flags argument to the bridge .attach() operation allows instructing the bridge driver to skip creating a connector. Unconditionally set the new flags argument to 0 for now to keep the existing behaviour, and modify all existing bridge drivers to return an error when connector creation is not requested as they don't support this feature yet. The change is based on the following semantic patch, with manual review and edits. @ rule1 @ identifier funcs; identifier fn; @@ struct drm_bridge_funcs funcs = { ..., .attach = fn }; @ depends on rule1 @ identifier rule1.fn; identifier bridge; statement S, S1; @@ int fn( struct drm_bridge *bridge + , enum drm_bridge_attach_flags flags ) { ... when != S + if (flags & DRM_BRIDGE_ATTACH_NO_CONNECTOR) { + DRM_ERROR("Fix bridge driver to make connector optional!"); + return -EINVAL; + } + S1 ... } @ depends on rule1 @ identifier rule1.fn; identifier bridge, flags; expression E1, E2, E3; @@ int fn( struct drm_bridge *bridge, enum drm_bridge_attach_flags flags ) { <... drm_bridge_attach(E1, E2, E3 + , flags ) ...> } @@ expression E1, E2, E3; @@ drm_bridge_attach(E1, E2, E3 + , 0 ) Signed-off-by: Laurent Pinchart <[email protected]> Reviewed-by: Boris Brezillon <[email protected]> Acked-by: Sam Ravnborg <[email protected]> Reviewed-by: Tomi Valkeinen <[email protected]> Tested-by: Sebastian Reichel <[email protected]> Reviewed-by: Sebastian Reichel <[email protected]> Acked-by: Daniel Vetter <[email protected]> Signed-off-by: Tomi Valkeinen <[email protected]> Link: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/msgid/[email protected]
2019-09-08drm/bridge: panel: Infer connector type from panel by defaultLaurent Pinchart1-2/+2
The drm panel bridge creates a connector using a connector type explicitly passed by the display controller or bridge driver that instantiates the panel bridge. Now that drm_panel reports its connector type, we can use it to avoid passing an explicit (and often incorrect) connector type to drm_panel_bridge_add() and devm_drm_panel_bridge_add(). Several drivers report incorrect or unknown connector types to userspace. Reporting a different type may result in a breakage. For that reason, rename (devm_)drm_panel_bridge_add() to (devm_)drm_panel_bridge_add_typed(), and add new (devm_)drm_panel_bridge_add() functions that use the panel connector type. Update all callers of (devm_)drm_panel_bridge_add() to the _typed function, they will be converted one by one after testing. The panel drivers have been updated with the following Coccinelle semantic patch, with manual inspection and fixes to indentation. @@ expression bridge; expression dev; expression panel; identifier type; @@ ( -bridge = drm_panel_bridge_add(panel, type); +bridge = drm_panel_bridge_add_typed(panel, type); | -bridge = devm_drm_panel_bridge_add(dev, panel, type); +bridge = devm_drm_panel_bridge_add_typed(dev, panel, type); ) Signed-off-by: Laurent Pinchart <[email protected]> Reviewed-by: Boris Brezillon <[email protected]> Signed-off-by: Sam Ravnborg <[email protected]> Link: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/msgid/[email protected]
2019-08-28drm: Stop including drm_bridge.h from drm_crtc.hBoris Brezillon1-0/+1
We are about to add a drm_bridge_state that inherits from drm_private_state which is defined in drm_atomic.h. Problem is, drm_atomic.h includes drm_crtc.h which in turn includes drm_bridge.h, leading to "drm_private_state has incomplete type" error. Let's force all users of the drm_bridge API to explicitly include drm_bridge.h. 2019-01-24drm: Split out drm_probe_helper.hDaniel Vetter1-0/+1
Having the probe helper stuff (which pretty much everyone needs) in the drm_crtc_helper.h file (which atomic drivers should never need) is confusing. Split them out. To make sure I actually achieved the goal here I went through all drivers. And indeed, all atomic drivers are now free of drm_crtc_helper.h includes. v2: Make it compile. There was so much compile fail on arm drivers that I figured I'll better not include any of the acks on v1. v3: Massive rebase because i915 has lost a lot of drmP.h includes, but not all: Through drm_crtc_helper.h > drm_modeset_helper.h -> drmP.h there was still one, which this patch largely removes. Which means rolling out lots more includes all over. This will also conflict with ongoing drmP.h cleanup by others I expect. v3: Rebase on top of atomic bochs. v4: Review from Laurent for bridge/rcar/omap/shmob/core bits: - (re)move some of the added includes, use the better include files in other places (all suggested from Laurent adopted unchanged). - sort alphabetically v5: Actually try to sort them, and while at it, sort all the ones I touch. v6: Rebase onto i915 changes. v7: Rebase once more. 2017-04-06drm: convert drivers to use of_graph_get_remote_nodeRob Herring1-60/+8
Convert drivers to use the new of_graph_get_remote_node() helper instead of parsing the endpoint node and then getting the remote device node. Now drivers can just specify the device node and which port/endpoint and get back the connected remote device node. The details of the graph binding are nicely abstracted into the core OF graph code. This changes some error messages to debug messages (in the graph core). Graph connections are often "no connects" depending on the particular board, so we want to avoid spurious messages. Plus the kernel is not a DT validator. Choose console BPP that supports RGB and remove the old fbdev bpp selection code. LCDC on AM335x has red and blue wires switched between 24 bit and 16 bit colors. 2015-05-27drm/tilcdc: Add support for external tda998x encoderJyri Sarha1-0/+166
Add support for an external compontised DRM encoder. The external encoder can be connected to tilcdc trough device tree graph binding. The binding document for tilcdc has been updated. The current implementation supports only tda998x encoder. To be able to filter out the unsupported video modes the tilcdc driver needs to hijack the external connectors helper functions. The tilcdc installes new helper functions that are otherwise identical to orignals, but the mode_valid() call-back check the mode first localy, before calling the original call-back. The tilcdc dirver restores the original helper functions before it is unbound from the external device. I got the idea and some lines of code from Jean-Francois Moine's "drm/tilcdc: Change the interface with the tda998x driver"-patch.
