2019-03-08drm/i915: Do a synchronous switch-to-kernel-context on idlingChris Wilson1-10/+4
When the system idles, we switch to the kernel context as a defensive measure (no users are harmed if the kernel context is lost). Currently, we issue a switch to kernel context and then come back later to see if the kernel context is still current and the system is idle. However, if we are no longer privy to the runqueue ordering, then we have to relax our assumptions about the logical state of the GPU and the only way to ensure that the kernel context is currently loaded is by issuing a request to run after all others, and wait for it to complete all while preventing anyone else from issuing their own requests. v2: Pull wedging into switch_to_kernel_context_sync() but only after waiting (though only for the same short delay) for the active context to finish. In the next patch, we are introducing a broad virtual engine to encompass multiple physical engines, losing the 1:1 nature of BIT(engine->id). 2019-03-01drm/i915: Use HW semaphores for inter-engine synchronisation on gen8+Chris Wilson1-1/+1
Having introduced per-context seqno, we now have a means to identity progress across the system without feel of rollback as befell the global_seqno. That is we can program a MI_SEMAPHORE_WAIT operation in advance of submission safe in the knowledge that our target seqno and address is stable. However, since we are telling the GPU to busy-spin on the target address until it matches the signaling seqno, we only want to do so when we are sure that busy-spin will be completed quickly. To achieve this we only submit the request to HW once the signaler is itself executing (modulo preemption causing us to wait longer), and we only do so for default and above priority requests (so that idle priority tasks never themselves hog the GPU waiting for others). As might be reasonably expected, HW semaphores excel in inter-engine synchronisation microbenchmarks (where the 3x reduced latency / increased throughput more than offset the power cost of spinning on a second ring) and have significant improvement (can be up to ~10%, most see no change) for single clients that utilize multiple engines (typically media players and transcoders), without regressing multiple clients that can saturate the system or changing the power envelope dramatically. v3: Drop the older NEQ branch, now we pin the signaler's HWSP anyway. v4: Tell the world and include it as part of scheduler caps. 2019-02-05drm/i915: Include register polling in reg_rw tracesVille Syrjälä1-2/+10
We generally omit register polling from the i915_reg_rw tracepoint. Understandable since polling could generate a lot of noise in the trace. The downside is that the trace is incomplete. As a compromise let's trace the final register value observed while polling. That should be generally sufficient to observe what the code should be doing next. I suppose in some cases it might make sense to also trace the initial register value, and maybe the number of times we polled. But that would require a separate tracepoint so let's leave it for the future. The other users of _NOTRACE() are i915_pmu and i2c bitbanging, which I decided to leave alone. Next we should do something to claw back the tracepoints for planes and whatnot which were switched to _FW() a while back. I guess just new macros for raw_rw+trace. The question is what to call it? This is only used by drm_irq_install(), which is an optional helper. For legacy pci devices this is required (due to interrupt sharing without msi/msi-x), and just making this the default exactly matches the behaviour of all existing drivers using the drm_irq_install() helpers. Having the probe helper stuff (which pretty much everyone needs) in the drm_crtc_helper.h file (which atomic drivers should never need) is confusing. Split them out. To make sure I actually achieved the goal here I went through all drivers. And indeed, all atomic drivers are now free of drm_crtc_helper.h includes. v2: Make it compile. There was so much compile fail on arm drivers that I figured I'll better not include any of the acks on v1. v3: Massive rebase because i915 has lost a lot of drmP.h includes, but not all: Through drm_crtc_helper.h > drm_modeset_helper.h -> drmP.h there was still one, which this patch largely removes. Which means rolling out lots more includes all over. 2019-01-14drm/i915: Mark up Ironlake ips with rpm wakerefsChris Wilson1-0/+3
Currently Ironlake operates under the assumption that rpm awake (and its error checking is disabled). As such, we have missed a few places where we access registers without taking the rpm wakeref and thus trigger warnings. intel_ips being one culprit. As this involved adding a potentially sleeping rpm_get, we have to rearrange the spinlocks slightly and so switch to acquiring a device-ref under the spinlock rather than hold the spinlock for the whole operation. To be consistent, we make the change in pattern common to the intel_ips interface even though this adds a few more atomic operations than necessary in a few cases. v2: Sagar noted the mb around setting mch_dev were overkill as we only need ordering there, and that i915_emon_status was still using struct_mutex for no reason, but lacked rpm. Everytime we take a wakeref, record the stack trace of where it was taken; clearing the set if we ever drop back to no owners. When we first introduced the reset to sanitize the GPU on taking over from the BIOS and before returning control to third parties (the BIOS!), we restricted it to only systems utilizing HW contexts as we were uncertain of how stable our reset mechanism truly was. We now have reasonable coverage across all machines that expose a GPU reset method, and so we should be safe to sanitize the GPU state everywhere. v2: We _have_ to skip the reset if it would clobber the display. 2018-12-28drm/i915: Remove HW semaphores for gen7 inter-engine synchronisationChris Wilson1-1/+1
The writing is on the wall for the existence of a single execution queue along each engine, and as a consequence we will not be able to track dependencies along the HW queue itself, i.e. we will not be able to use HW semaphores on gen7 as they use a global set of registers (and unlike gen8+ we can not effectively target memory to keep per-context seqno and dependencies). On the positive side, when we implement request reordering for gen7 we also can not presume a simple execution queue and would also require removing the current semaphore generation code. So this bring us another step closer to request reordering for ringbuffer submission! The negative side is that using interrupts to drive inter-engine synchronisation is much slower (4us -> 15us to do a nop on each of the 3 engines on ivb). This is much better than it was at the time of introducing the HW semaphores and equally important userspace weaned itself off intermixing dependent BLT/RENDER operations (the prime culprit was glyph rendering in UXA). So while we regress the microbenchmarks, it should not impact the user. To enable later verification of GT workaround state at various stages of driver lifetime, we record the list of applicable ones per platforms to a list, from which they are also applied. The added data structure is a simple array of register, mask and value items, which is allocated on demand as workarounds are added to the list. This is a temporary implementation which later in the series gets fused with the existing per context workaround list handling. It is separated at this stage since the following patch fixes a bug which needs to be as easy to backport as possible.
