2009-03-02tracing: make CALLER_ADDRx overwriteableUwe Kleine-Koenig1-0/+1
The current definition of CALLER_ADDRx isn't suitable for all platforms. E.g. for ARM __builtin_return_address(N) doesn't work for N > 0 and AFAIK for powerpc there are no frame pointers needed to have a working __builtin_return_address. This patch allows defining the CALLER_ADDRx macros in <asm/ftrace.h> and let these take precedence. Because now <asm/ftrace.h> is included unconditionally in <linux/ftrace.h> all archs that don't already had this include get an empty one for free. 2009-01-06mm: invoke oom-killer from page faultNick Piggin1-16/+8
Rather than have the pagefault handler kill a process directly if it gets a VM_FAULT_OOM, have it call into the OOM killer. With increasingly sophisticated oom behaviour (cpusets, memory cgroups, oom killing throttling, oom priority adjustment or selective disabling, panic on oom, etc), it's silly to unconditionally kill the faulting process at page fault time. Create a hook for pagefault oom path to call into instead. Only converted x86 and uml so far. 2009-01-05get rid of the last symlink in uml buildAl Viro1-14/+11
We need to make asm-offsets.h contents visible for objects built with userland headers. Instead of creating a symlink, just have the file with equivalent include (relative to location of header) created once. That kills the last symlink used in arch/um builds. Additionally, both generated headers can become dependencies of archprepare now, killing the misuse of prepare. 2008-12-13cpumask: centralize cpu_online_map and cpu_possible_mapRusty Russell1-7/+0
Impact: cleanup Each SMP arch defines these themselves. Move them to a central location. Twists: 1) Some archs (m32, parisc, s390) set possible_map to all 1, so we add a CONFIG_INIT_ALL_POSSIBLE for this rather than break them. 2) mips and sparc32 '#define cpu_possible_map phys_cpu_present_map'. Those archs simply have phys_cpu_present_map replaced everywhere. 3) Alpha defined cpu_possible_map to cpu_present_map; this is tricky so I just manipulate them both in sync. 4) IA64, cris and m32r have gratuitous 'extern cpumask_t cpu_possible_map' declarations. 2008-10-21[PATCH] beginning of methods conversionAl Viro1-3/+3
To keep the size of changesets sane we split the switch by drivers; to keep the damn thing bisectable we do the following: 1) rename the affected methods, add ones with correct prototypes, make (few) callers handle both. That's this changeset. 2) for each driver convert to new methods. *ALL* drivers are converted in this series. 3) kill the old (renamed) methods. Note that it _is_ a flagday; all in-tree drivers are converted and by the end of this series no trace of old methods remain. The only reason why we do that this way is to keep the damn thing bisectable and allow per-driver debugging if anything goes wrong. New methods: open(bdev, mode) release(disk, mode) ioctl(bdev, mode, cmd, arg) /* Called without BKL */ compat_ioctl(bdev, mode, cmd, arg) locked_ioctl(bdev, mode, cmd, arg) /* Called with BKL, legacy */ Signed-off-by: Al Viro <[email protected]>
