CONFIG_NO_HZ_FULL requires possibility of smp_send_reschedule() for the calling CPU. Currently, it is used in inc_nr_running() scheduler primitive only. Nobody calls smp_send_reschedule() from preemptible context (furthermore, it looks like it will be save if anybody use it another way in the future). 2013-11-14sparc: PCI: Fix incorrect address calculation of PCI Bridge windows on ↵oftedal1-2/+2
Simba-bridges The SIMBA APB Bridges lacks the 'ranges' of-property describing the PCI I/O and memory areas located beneath the bridge. Faking this information has been performed by reading range registers in the APB bridge, and calculating the corresponding areas. In commit 01f94c4a6ced476ce69b895426fc29bfc48c69bd ("Fix sabre pci controllers with new probing scheme.") a bug was introduced into this calculation, causing the PCI memory areas to be calculated incorrectly: The shift size was set to be identical for I/O and MEM ranges, which is incorrect. 2013-11-14PM / Hibernate: Do not crash kernel in free_basic_memory_bitmaps()Rafael J. Wysocki2-1/+3
I have received a report about the BUG_ON() in free_basic_memory_bitmaps() triggering mysteriously during an aborted s2disk hibernation attempt. The only way I can explain that is that /dev/snapshot was first opened for writing (resume mode), then closed and then opened again for reading and closed again without freezing tasks. In that case the first invocation of snapshot_open() would set the free_bitmaps flag in snapshot_state, which is a static variable. That flag wouldn't be cleared later and the second invocation of snapshot_open() would just leave it like that, so the subsequent snapshot_release() would see data->frozen set and free_basic_memory_bitmaps() would be called unnecessarily. To prevent that from happening clear data->free_bitmaps in snapshot_open() when the file is being opened for reading (hibernate mode). In addition to that, replace the BUG_ON() in free_basic_memory_bitmaps() with a WARN_ON() as the kernel can continue just fine if the condition checked by that macro occurs. 2013-11-14virtio-net: mergeable buffer size should include virtio-net headerMichael Dalton1-14/+16
Commit 2613af0ed18a ("virtio_net: migrate mergeable rx buffers to page frag allocators") changed the mergeable receive buffer size from PAGE_SIZE to MTU-size. However, the merge buffer size does not take into account the size of the virtio-net header. Consequently, packets that are MTU-size will take two buffers intead of one (to store the virtio-net header), substantially decreasing the throughput of MTU-size traffic due to TCP window / SKB truesize effects. This commit changes the mergeable buffer size to include the virtio-net header. The buffer size is cacheline-aligned because skb_page_frag_refill will not automatically align the requested size. Benchmarks taken from an average of 5 netperf 30-second TCP_STREAM runs between two QEMU VMs on a single physical machine. Each VM has two VCPUs and vhost enabled. All VMs and vhost threads run in a single 4 CPU cgroup cpuset, using cgroups to ensure that other processes in the system will not be scheduled on the benchmark CPUs. Current spi bus_num.chip_select "spix.y" based device naming scheme may not be stable enough to be used in name based matching, for instance within ALSA SoC subsystem. This can be problem in PC kind of platforms if there are changes in SPI bus configuration, amount of busses or probe order. This patch addresses the problem by using the ACPI device name with "spi-" prefix for ACPI enumerated SPI slave. For them device name "spix.y" becomes "spi-INTABCD:ij". Current I2C adapter id - client address "x-00yy" based device naming scheme is not always stable enough to be used in name based matching, for instance within ALSA SoC subsystem. This is problematic in PC kind of platforms where I2C adapter numbers can change due variable amount of bus controllers, probe order, add-on cards or just because of BIOS settings. This patch addresses the problem by using the ACPI device name with "i2c-" prefix for ACPI enumerated I2C slaves. For them device name "x-00yz" becomes "i2c-INTABCD:ij" after this patch. We may find use for dev_name(&adev->dev) in generic code that is build also without CONFIG_ACPI is set but currently this requires #ifdef CONFIG_ACPI churn. 2013-11-14connector: improved unaligned access error fixChris Metcalf1-30/+42
In af3e095a1fb4, Erik Jacobsen fixed one type of unaligned access bug for ia64 by converting a 64-bit write to use put_unaligned(). Unfortunately, since gcc will convert a short memset() to a series of appropriately-aligned stores, the problem is now visible again on tilegx, where the memset that zeros out proc_event is converted to three 64-bit stores, causing an unaligned access panic. A better fix for the original problem is to ensure that proc_event is aligned to 8 bytes here. We can do that relatively easily by arranging to start the struct cn_msg aligned to 8 bytes and then offset by 4 bytes. Doing so means that the immediately following proc_event structure is then correctly aligned to 8 bytes. The result is that the memset() stores are now aligned, and as an added benefit, we can remove the put_unaligned() calls in the code. When associating a "physical" device with an ACPI device object acpi_bind_one() only uses get_device() to increment the reference counter of the former, but there is no reason not to do that with the latter too. Among other things, that may help to avoid use-after-free when an ACPI device object is freed without calling acpi_unbind_one() for all "physical" devices associated with it (that only can happen in buggy code, but then it's better if the kernel doesn't crash as a result of a bug). For this reason, modify acpi_bind_one() to apply get_device() to the ACPI device object too and update acpi_unbind_one() to drop that reference using put_device() as appropriate. This clashes with setups using PRIO with say 7 bands, as one of the band could be incorrectly (mis)classified by FQ. 2013-11-14ACPI / driver core: Store an ACPI device pointer in struct acpi_dev_nodeRafael J. Wysocki22-68/+70
Modify struct acpi_dev_node to contain a pointer to struct acpi_device associated with the given device object (that is, its ACPI companion device) instead of an ACPI handle corresponding to it. Introduce two new macros for manipulating that pointer in a CONFIG_ACPI-safe way, ACPI_COMPANION() and ACPI_COMPANION_SET(), and rework the ACPI_HANDLE() macro to take the above changes into account. Drop the ACPI_HANDLE_SET() macro entirely and rework its users to use ACPI_COMPANION_SET() instead. For some of them who used to pass the result of acpi_get_child() directly to ACPI_HANDLE_SET() introduce a helper routine acpi_preset_companion() doing an equivalent thing. The main motivation for doing this is that there are things represented by struct acpi_device objects that don't have valid ACPI handles (so called fixed ACPI hardware features, such as power and sleep buttons) and we would like to create platform device objects for them and "glue" them to their ACPI companions in the usual way (which currently is impossible due to the lack of valid ACPI handles). However, there are more reasons why it may be useful. First, struct acpi_device pointers allow of much better type checking than void pointers which are ACPI handles, so it should be more difficult to write buggy code using modified struct acpi_dev_node and the new macros. Second, the change should help to reduce (over time) the number of places in which the result of ACPI_HANDLE() is passed to acpi_bus_get_device() in order to obtain a pointer to the struct acpi_device associated with the given "physical" device, because now that pointer is returned by ACPI_COMPANION() directly. This reduces the data size needed by the users of genetlink, for example in wireless (net/wireless/nl80211.c) on 64-bit it frees up over 1K of data space. Remove the attempted sending of CTRL_CMD_NEWOPS ctrl event since genl_ctrl_event(CTRL_CMD_NEWOPS, ...) only returns -EINVAL anyway, therefore no such event could ever be sent. Bug has been introduced by commit bb8140947a24 ("ip6tnl: allow to use rtnl ops on fb tunnel"). When ip6_tunnel.ko is unloaded, FB device is delete by rtnl_link_unregister() and then we try to use the pointer in ip6_tnl_destroy_tunnels(). Let's add an handler for dellink, which will never remove the FB tunnel. With this patch it will no more be possible to remove it via 'ip link del ip6tnl0', but it's safer. The same fix was already proposed by Willem de Bruijn <[email protected]> for sit interfaces. When a link local address was added to a sit interface, the corresponding route was not configured. This breaks routing protocols that use the link local address, like OSPFv3. To ease the code reading, I remove sit_route_add(), which only adds v4 mapped routes, and add this kind of route directly in sit_add_v4_addrs(). 2013-11-14sit: fix use after free of fb_tunnel_devWillem de Bruijn1-4/+14
Bug: The fallback device is created in sit_init_net and assumed to be freed in sit_exit_net. First, it is dereferenced in that function, in sit_destroy_tunnels: struct net *net = dev_net(sitn->fb_tunnel_dev); Prior to this, rtnl_unlink_register has removed all devices that match rtnl_link_ops == sit_link_ops. Commit 205983c43700 added the line + sitn->fb_tunnel_dev->rtnl_link_ops = &sit_link_ops; which cases the fallback device to match here and be freed before it is last dereferenced. Fix: This commit adds an explicit .delllink callback to sit_link_ops that skips deallocation at rtnl_unlink_register for the fallback device. This mechanism is comparable to the one in ip_tunnel. It also modifies sit_destroy_tunnels and its only caller sit_exit_net to avoid the offending dereference in the first place. That double lookup is more complicated than required. Test: The bug is only triggered when CONFIG_NET_NS is enabled. It causes a GPF only when CONFIG_DEBUG_SLAB is enabled. Verified that this bug exists at the mentioned commit, at davem-net HEAD and at 3.11.y HEAD. Verified that it went away after applying this patch. recovering (v3) When a transport recovers due to the new coming sack, SCTP should iterate all of its transport_list to locate the __two__ most recently used transport and set to active_path and retran_path respectively. The exising code does not find the two properly - In case of the following list: [most-recent] -> [2nd-most-recent] -> ... Both active_path and retran_path would be set to the 1st element. The bug happens when: 1) multi-homing 2) failure/partial_failure transport recovers Both active_path and retran_path would be set to the same most-recent one, in other words, retran_path would not take its role - an end user might not even notice this issue. 2013-11-14tcp: tsq: restore minimal amount of queueingEric Dumazet3-10/+5
After commit c9eeec26e32e ("tcp: TSQ can use a dynamic limit"), several users reported throughput regressions, notably on mvneta and wifi adapters. 802.11 AMPDU requires a fair amount of queueing to be effective. This patch partially reverts the change done in tcp_write_xmit() so that the minimal amount is sysctl_tcp_limit_output_bytes. It also remove the use of this sysctl while building skb stored in write queue, as TSO autosizing does the right thing anyway. Users with well behaving NICS and correct qdisc (like sch_fq), can then lower the default sysctl_tcp_limit_output_bytes value from 128KB to 8KB. This new usage of sysctl_tcp_limit_output_bytes permits each driver authors to check how their driver performs when/if the value is set to a minimum of 4KB. Normally, line rate for a single TCP flow should be possible, but some drivers rely on timers to perform TX completion and too long TX completion delays prevent reaching full throughput. ENOTSUPP is used by the NFS implementation and is not part of userland API; we want EOPNOTSUPP (which glibc also calls ENOTSUP, with one 'P'). Untested as I don't have a cross-compiler to hand.
